Due to the nature of the genre, which often includes alien species and societies, distant future scenarios, and other fantastic elements, science fiction has been more free to explore "alternative" sexualities and gender identities than most other genres, and for longer. For example, Ursula K. Le Guin's classic science fiction novel The Left Hand of Darkness, published in 1969, was one of the first novels to explore the concept of androgyny with its depiction of a society in which individuals have no fixed gender.
