Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, also known as Phlint by fans, is a non-canon slash ship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As of September 2016, it was the third most popular ship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe tag on the fanfiction archive An Archive of Our Own (AO3) and the 16th most popular ship on the archive as a whole, with more than 9,000 fanworks tagged with the pairing.

Considering the popularity of the ship, many fans are surprised to learn that the two characters share only 47 seconds of interaction onscreen (in the film Thor), plus a few pages in the prequel comics for The Avengers.

Films vs Comics

The character of Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye) appears in both comics and films. He is canonically heterosexual and has had relationships in the comics with Bobbi Morse (Mockingbird) and Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) in Earth-616, and wife Laura Barton in Earth-1610. In Avengers: Age of Ultron it was revealed that Barton is married to Laura in the films and has three children.

Most Clint/Coulson fanworks base their characterization of Hawkeye more on the comics, specifically the popular Hawkeye Vol 4 run by Matt Fraction and David Aja, in which Clint is single.
