Gods and Monsters is a 1998 film about the last days of James Whale, director of Frankenstein, among many other classic films.

Whale was openly gay during a period when this was very rare and suffered a series of strokes in his later life that caused him physical and mental distress. He was found dead in his pool at the age of 67 and the death was ruled a suicide.

Director and screenwriter Bill Condon received an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film.
