Hikaru Sulu is a character in the Star Trek universe. In July 2016, he became the first openly LGBT human character in any Star Trek film or television series when actor John Cho announced that he would be portrayed as an openly gay man in the upcoming film Star Trek: Beyond as a tribute to actor George Takei[1], who came out as gay in 2005 and played Sulu in Star Trek: The Original Series.

Sulu is born on June 24, 2230 in San Francisco and is of Japanese descent. He is best known as Lieutenant Sulu, helmsman of the USS Enterprise, but in the films was eventually promoted to Captain and given command of the USS Excelsior.

Fandom

Long before he was confirmed gay by Star Trek: Beyond, Sulu was a popular subject of slash fanfiction and other fanworks, with the most popular pairing being Sulu/Chekov.
