Simon Pegg, the co-writer of Star Trek: Beyond, has described Kirk as a "pansexual fun seeker" and he is portrayed as a womanizer in both the original and reboot series. However, Kirk is also a popular subject of slash fanworks due to his close relationship with Spock. The non-canon slash ship Kirk/Spock is one of the earliest ships known to inspire slash fanfiction, fanart, and other fanworks, and the term "slash" itself originated with Kirk/Spock shippers seeking to differentiate between fanworks that portrayed the pair as being in a romantic or sexual relationship and those that depicted their friendship as platonic. Kirk/McCoy is also an extremely popular slash ship, particularly among fans of the reboot series.
