Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox (born May 29, 1984) is an American transgender actress best known for her role as Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black. She is the first transgender person to be on the cover of Time magazine, to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy in an acting category (Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014 for her role as Sophia Burset), and to have a wax work in Madame Tussauds.

She has spoken publicly about her suicide attempt at the age of 11 after being bullied for not acting "the way someone assigned male at birth was supposed to act"[1] and is widely recognized for her activism in promoting transgender acceptance and LGBT rights.
