Shipping is short for "relationshipping" and it is a fandom term that means supporting or wishing for a particular romantic or sexual relationship, also known as a "pairing" or "ship". People who support one or more ships are called "shippers."

Ships can be either canon or non-canon and can be "het" (heterosexual), "slash" (a male/male romantic or sexual relationship), "femslash" (a female/female romantic or sexual relationship), or "poly" (a polyamorous relationship between three or more people). Platonic relationships are sometimes called "gen" ships.

Shippers support their ships in different ways, but common shipping activities include creating fanworks such as fanfiction, fanart, or fanvids and participating in discussions on message boards, social media, and other platforms.
