Yaoi is a genre of Japanese anime and manga that depicts male/male romantic or sexual relationships. The term is also sometimes used as a synonym for slash.

Yaoi is often written by and marketed to heterosexual women and girls, and commonly focuses on bishōnen characters and employs tropes such as seme/uke relationships. It can be contrasted to some degree with bara, which involves m/m homosexual relationships but is typically written by and for gay men.
